Selasa, 26/02/08 –Pihak penjajah Israel telah membebaskan seorang professor fizik Essam Al-Ashkar, 50, selepas 2 tahun ditahan tanpa bicara atas alasan ordinan ‘tahanan pentadbiran’.
Ashkar ahli fizik terkenal itu ditahan pada 3/2/2006 di Pusat Siasatan Petah Tikwa dan keadaan kesihatannya bertambah teruk akibat penyakit darah tinggi.
Sepanjang penahanan, beliau sering dibawa ke hospital dan penahanan tanpa bicaranya telah diperbaharui sebanyak 5 kali.
Beliau merupakan pensyarah Universiti Najah di Nablus dan anaknya Mujahid, 20, yang ditahan atas ordinan yang sama telah dilanjutkan penahanannya pada hari beliau dibebaskan.
Ashker dilahirkan di kampung Sida, Tulkaram pada tahun 1958 dan merupakan graduan BA tahun 1980 dan Master dalam Fizik tahun 1982 dari Universiti Yarmouk, Jordan. Beliau kemudiannya menjadi pensyarah di Universiti Najah sebelum ke Amerika untuk mendapatkan pendidikan dalam PhD dari Universiti Ohio Toledo pada tahun 1990.
